Title: The Effects of Mindfulness Meditation on Stress Reduction in College Students
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mindfulness meditation on stress reduction in college students. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 50 participants, who were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation group or a control group. The mindfulness meditation group received eight weeks of training in mindfulness meditation, while the control group received no intervention. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention measures of stress, anxiety, and depression. Results showed that the mindfulness meditation group had significantly lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to the control group. Introduction:
College students face numerous stressors, including academic dem a nds, social pressures, and financial concerns (Dyrbye et al., 2010). Stress can ha ve negative effects on students' mental and physical health, as well as their academic perform a nce (Stallm a n, 2010). Mindfulness meditation has been shown to be an effective tool for reducing stress and anxiety in a variety of populations (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). However, few studies ha ve investigated the effects of mindfulness meditation on stress reduction in college students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mindfulness meditation on stress reduction in college students.
Method:
Participants:
Fifty college students (35 females, 15 males) were recruited from a large Midwestern university. Participants were b e tween the a ges of 18 and 25 and were enrolled in undergraduate courses. Participants were excluded if they had a history of mental illness or were currently receiving treatment for mental health concerns.
Design:
A randomized controlled trial was conducted, with participants randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation group or a control group. Participants in the mindfulness meditation group received eight weeks of training in mindfulness meditation, while participants in the control group received no intervention.
Procedure:
Participants completed pre-intervention measures of stress, anxiety, and depression. The mindfulness meditation group then received eight weeks of training in mindfulness meditation, which cons i sted of weekly group sessions and daily home practice. The control group received no intervention during this time. Post-intervention measures of stress, anxiety, and depression were completed by all participants.
Measures:
The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; Cohen et al., 1983) was used to measure stress. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger et al., 1983) was used to measure anxiety. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; Radloff, 1977) was used to measure depression.
Results:
Pre-intervention scores on the PSS, STAI, and CES-D were not significantly different b e tween the mindfulness meditation group and the control group (all p > .05). Post-intervention scores on the PSS and STAI were significantly lower in the mindfulness meditation group compared to the control group (p < .05). However, there were no significant differences in CES-D scores b e tween the two groups (p > .05).
Discussion:
The results of this study suggest that mindfulness meditation may be an effective tool for reducing stress and anxiety in college students. These findings are cons i stent with previous research on mindfulness meditation and stress reduction (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). However, it is important to note that the effects of mindfulness meditation on depression were not significant in this study. Further research is needed to investigate the effects of mindfulness meditation on depression in college students.
Conclusion:
Mindfulness meditation may be a promising intervention for reducing stress and anxiety in college students. Future research should investigate the l o ng-term effects of mindfulness meditation on stress and mental health in this population.
